🌀Objective: The classes serve as physical and somatic preparation for the jam that follows until 4:00 pm. The content is accessible to beginners and stimulating for more experienced practitioners. In the spirit of Steve Paxton's philosophy, there is no hierarchy in Contact Improvisation: there is always something to explore and learn, regardless of level or experience.

A passionate and committed team

We have brought together teachers who are actively involved in CI practice and in the activities of the ACI.
Some bring extensive teaching experience, while others, though newer to this role, demonstrate a strong potential for transmission and facilitation.

Course content

True & and Aware with Saule Ikigai
I invite you to explore Contact Improvisation, moving with awareness and creativity, responding to the sensations of weight, lightness, and gravity. We will seek the grounding and momentum that support our dancing structure, that of our partners, and the shared weight. Lightness and fluidity will guide our movement, freeing the dance of expectations. We will also honor the emotional space: how to enter the duet, maintain connection, and conclude with presence and care.
All of this creates a space for experimentation and play, where body and emotions dialogue, and where every gesture becomes a living exploration of oneself, the other, and the pursuit of the unexpected… Being aware in the pursuit of the true.

Uneven territories with Alessia De Salis
This class proposes to explore the body as a territory on which we can dance and play — a living map made of mountains, valleys, plateaus, and paths to travel. The body becomes a landscape to inhabit, cross, and cartograph, rediscovering familiar pathways as well as those less explored or rarely taken.
Through play, we will revisit our relationship to the floor, to ourselves, and gradually to others. Play invites curiosity, lightness, and the freedom to not take ourselves too seriously, offering a space where movement habits can shift and soften.
We will explore both comfortable and less familiar paths, allowing playfulness and relation to emerge.
This class is open to all levels and invites everybody to explore at its own rhythm, within a shared, playful, and sensitive research space.

Dans l'esprit de la philosophie de Steve Paxton, il n'y a pas de hiérarchie en CI : il y a toujours quelque chose à explorer et à apprendre, quel que soit le niveau ou l'expérience.

Une équipe passionnée et engagée

Nous avons réuni des enseignant·e·s activement impliqué·e·s dans la pratique du Contact Improvisation et dans les activités de l'ACI. Certain·e·s possèdent une vaste expérience en enseignement, tandis que d'autres, bien que nouveaux dans ce rôle, démontrent un fort potentiel de transmission.
Pour favoriser une continuité pédagogique, chaque enseignant·e interviendra sur deux dimanches consécutifs.

Vrai & et présent.e avec Saule Ikigai
Je vous invite à explorer le Contact Improvisation, pour bouger avec conscience et créativité, en réponse aux sensations de poids, de légèreté et de gravité. En recherche de l'ancrage et de l'élan qui soutiennent notre structure dansante, celle de nos partenaires et le partage du poids. La légèreté et la fluidité guideront le mouvement, pour libérer la rencontre dansée des attentes. Sans oublier l'espace émotionnel : comment entrer dans le duo, maintenir le lien et conclure avec présence et soin.
Tout cela pour créer un espace d'expérimentation et de jeu, où corps et émotions dialoguent, et où chaque geste devient une exploration vivante de soi, de l'autre et de la recherche de l'inattendu… Être présent dans la quête du vrai.

Territoires de danse avec Alessia De Salis
Ce cours propose d'explorer le corps comme un territoire sur lequel on peut danser et jouer— une carte vivante faite de montagnes, de vallées, de plateaux et de chemins à parcourir. Le corps devient un paysage à habiter, à traverser et à cartographier, en redécouvrant les chemins familiers autant que ceux moins explorés ou rarement empruntés. À travers le jeu, nous revisitons notre relation au sol, à soi et, progressivement, à l'autre.
Le jeu invite à la curiosité, à la légèreté et à la liberté de ne pas se prendre au sérieux, offrant un espace où les habitudes de mouvement peuvent se transformer et s'assouplir.
Nous explorerons les chemins confortables comme ceux moins familiers, laissant émerger le plaisir et le jeu.
Ce cours est accessible à tous les niveaux et invite chaque corps à explorer à son rythme, dans un espace de recherche partagé, ludique et sensible.

The Legacy of Nancy Stark Smith: The Underscore

The activity will be facilitated by Stephanie Gaudreau.

Saturdays, October 25 and December 5 in Montreal, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.,
talk-through at 1 p.m.

The Underscore facilitates the understanding and embodiment of the phases we go through in a Contact Improvisation jam.
It is a spacious and engaging experience shared by participants that can trigger surprising kinesthetic and compositional improvisational dance within a defined framework.

Developed by Nancy Stark Smith, the Underscore is a structure offered for Contact Improvisation jams that maps the different phases of a collective improvisation. Using simple pictograms, it makes visible the transitions—from solo to encounter, from inner listening to spontaneous composition—and supports a journey of approximately three hours.

In short, we dance within a clear, open, and supportive framework that carries expressivity over a three-hour period, followed by a time of sharing to integrate the experience through the body's writing.

Participants must attend (or have already attended) a one-hour talk-through
Talk-through to attend the Underscore practice and must already have some experience in Contact Improvisation.

Talk-through Teaching 1 hour before the practice.
Underscore practice We start together and we end together.

Facilitator Stéphanie Gaudreau has been exploring and dancing the Underscore with its creator, Nancy Stark Smith, since 2004. She has been sharing this practice in Montreal and other regions since 2014 and also guides the Global Underscore annually in Estrie (Danse Orée des Bois).

The « talk-through » provides a clear and engaging introduction to the Underscore: a structured framework for a long session of improvisational and Contact Improvisation dance.
For those who've already attended a talk-through and would like a refresher, it's FREE.

The Practice of Underscore: $15

Underscore is a framework for practice and research on dance improvisation and contact improvisation developed in the 1990s by Nancy Stark Smith (one of the founders of contact improvisation).

The Underscore is a score that guides dancers through a series of "changing states":
– warm-up on the floor (relaxation and awareness of gravity and supports);
– movement in space and interaction with the group;
– opportunities for engagement with a partner;
– openness to group improvisation with an awareness of composition;
– return to rest and reflection (excerpt from "Caught Falling").

Wear comfortable, cotton-like clothing. Knee pads are recommended.

Samedis 25 octobre et 5 décembre à Montréal de 14h à 17h,

L'Underscore facilite la compréhension et l'incarnation des phases que nous traversons dans un jam de Contact Improvisation.
C'est une expérience spacieuse et engageante partagée par les participants qui peut déclencher une danse improvisée kinesthésique et compositionnelle surprenante dans un cadre défini.

Développé par Nancy Stark Smith, l'Underscore est une structure offert pour les jams de Contact Improvisation qui cartographie les différentes phases d'une improvisation collective. À l'aide de pictogrammes simples, il rend visibles les passages — du solo à la rencontre, de l'écoute intérieure à la composition spontanée — et soutient une traversée d'environ trois heures.

En somme, nous dansons avec un cadre clair, libre et soutenant, qui porte l'expressivité sur une durée de 3hrs, suivie d'un temps de partage pour intégrer l'expérience par l'écriture du corps.

Les participants doivent assister (ou ont déjà assisté) à une transmission d'une heure
« Talk-through » pour assister à la pratique de l'Underscore et doivent déjà avoir une certaine expérience en Contact Improvisation.

La pratique de l'Underscore, On commence ensemble et on termine ensemble.

La facilitatrice Stéphanie Gaudreau a fait des recherches et dansé dans l'Underscore avec sa créatrice, Nancy Stark Smith, depuis 2004, et l'a animée à Montréal et en régions depuis 2014. Elle guide également le Global Underscore qui a lieu à chaque année en Estrie (Danse Orée des Bois).

Le « talk-through » nous donne « ce dans quoi nous allons nous engager ou « le plan de match » pour une longue session de danse improvisation et de contact improvisation.
Pour ceux qui ont déjà assisté à une transmission et qui souhaitent un "rafraîchissement", c'est GRATUIT.

Alessia De Salis

Alessia De Salis comes from a background in theatre and dance where play is central to her practice. She has danced for about twenty years and trained in theatre, clowning—which inspires a sense of pleasure and playfulness—Butoh—an approach to the infinitely small, to resonance and deep listening—and physical theatre and the Axis Syllabus, which informs her technique and vocabulary.
She is interested in creating play as a space for encounter and connection, a shortcut that blurs the boundaries between individuals and between our learning processes, in order to nurture knowledge, collective intelligence, and connection. Contact improvisation brings these influences together in a practice where expression, play, and physicality converge.

For several years, Alessia has worked with First Nations communities, exploring how play and games support ways of learning together. This research informs her pedagogical approach. A natural facilitator, she creates sensitive and accessible spaces for practice, conducive to exploration, listening, and the joy of moving together.

Alessia De Salis vient d'un parcours en théâtre et en danse où le jeu est au cœur de sa pratique. Elle danse depuis une vingtaine d'années et s'est formée en théâtre, en jeu clownesque — qui inspire l'appel au plaisir et au jeu —, au butō — l'approche de l'infiniment petit, de la résonance et de l'écoute profonde —, et au théâtre physique et à l'Axis Syllabus, qui informe sa technique et son vocabulaire.
Elle s'intéresse à la création du jeu comme espace de rencontre et de connexion, un raccourci qui brouille les frontières entre les individus et entre nos apprentissages, afin de nourrir le savoir et l'intelligence collective et la connexion. Le contact improvisation rassemble ces influences dans une pratique où l'expression, le jeu et la physicalité se rencontrent.

Depuis plusieurs années, Alessia travaille auprès des communautés des Premières Nations, où elle explore comment le jeu et le ludisme soutiennent des manières d'apprendre ensemble. Cette recherche nourrit son approche pédagogique. Animatrice dans l'âme, elle crée des espaces de pratique sensibles et accessibles, propices à l'exploration, à l'écoute et au plaisir de bouger ensemble.
